Halloween is just around the corner, here are some safety tips for all you ghosts and goblins out there to make your night of trick or treating fun and safe.
1. Go with a group of friends and/or have a Mom or Dad go out with you. (Remember that there is safety in numbers)
2. Stay away from lit candles. Many costumes are not flame resistant and can catch fire easily. Also wear some reflective tape, so that you can be seen in the dark. Take a flashlight with you, too.
3. Stay in your neighborhood and go to only the houses that have their lights on both inside and outside.
4. Look both ways before crossing the street. Use the crosswalks and stay on the sidewalks.
5. Don't approch any cars or go with any starangers.
6. Don't go inside any houses unless you know the people that live there.
7. Try wearing make-up instead of a mask. It will be easier for you to see and you won't get too hot.
8. WALK! Don't run as you go from house to house.
9. Don't eat any of your candy until you get home and Mom or Dad have inspected it. Avoid candy that is loosely wrapped, punctured or homemade (unless you know the family that made it). Fruit should be washed and cut up before eating.
10. Remember to say thank you when you get your candy. Have a fun, safe night so you can come back to class Saturday morning.

CONGRATULATIONS TO KAREN BURNS AND ILDIKO FEJES ON EARNING THEIR BLACK BELTS
On Friday, June 13th, Karen Burns and Ildiko Fejes tested for their Shodan Level (1st Black) in Chinese Kenpo. Both of these ladies have been training with ACS for close to 10 years and have been diligently working towards this goal. Attaining the level of Shodan is a very difficult task that is reserved for the few who are willing to put in the time and effort that it takes to be an ACS Black Belt. Way to go ladies!

ACS Karate gets BIG surprise
Sifu Gary McGhee was in town last week for a family function and surprised many people by "guest teaching"some of the classes on Thursday night 5/8/2008. Sifu and I had this pre-planned but I chose NOT to tell people about it in advance. I wanted to reward the students who showed up with something special.
Many times when my teachers come into town, there usually is a special clinic and an additional charge to train in the clinic. Not this time. I have had many positive comments from the students who were there and they all enjoyed the time spent with Sifu McGhee. I have also heard from students that were disappointed that they did not know about Sifu being here and teaching. Just come to classes and who knows what surprises may happen.
Sifu McGhee then turned around and surprised me by promoting me to 6th degree Black belt (Professor level) in Kenpo at the end of the Advanced class. It was truly unexpected.
On behalf of all of ACS, I want to thank Sifu McGhee for his generosity and help. God Bless.

Are you at risk for Gout?
I was reading the Sunday paper lately and came across this article; It seemed very appropriate to share with you because 4 of your dojo brothers have recently told me that they are suffering from this disease. Once again, this is from the Parade section of the Sunday paper (3-2-08).
Men who drink 2 sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day are at a 85% greater risk of suffering from gout, a painful condition that afflicts 1 in every 400 Americans. Research published recently in the British Medical Journal reveals that the fructose in many soft drinks raises blood levels of uric acid, whose crystals settle in the joints & inflame them.
The effect of frutose has not been determined in women. If you have gout or are vulnerable to it, add soft drinks to the list of foods to avoid, along with beer, red meat, yeast and oily fish.
In a gentle addition, drink water instead. Think of the needless calories you will avoid consuming and it is healthier for you anyways.

Spring returns to the Valley
It's springtime in the valley. We had a cool winter and now it is starting to get nice and warm out. Now's the time to get out and explore the wonders of nature that the desert has to offer us before it gets to be too hot outside.
Remember when you go out for your hikes to bring plenty of water with you. Bring your cell phone to call for help if needed and always stay on the marked trails. Don't forget to put on some sun block and bring some bananas or oranges for a little break when you get to your destination.
There are plenty of places in the valley to go to for a short hike, such as South Mountain, Echo Canyon, and Papago Park out by the zoo. Get out and have some fun. Remember not to over do any hiking, so that you can be here working on your katas and techniques later. Also, remember to do some stretching before and after you are done.

Mr. Kumar is named Student of the Year
Mr. Aseem Kumar was named ACS Karate’s student of the year for 2007. The ACS Student of the Year is voted on by the ACS coaching staff. It is awarded to a student who shows hard work and dedication in their training.
Mr. Kumar is an excellent example of hard work and dedication. Mr Kumar not only holds a 2nd Degree Black belt in Kenpo but he also has earned 3rd brown level in GSWS while training with ACS. He also attends Kick Boxing classes as well.
The student of the year is chosen from the twelve students of the month. The ACS coaches vote each month for the students they feel are showing the most hard work, dedication, and are devoting the time to their classes they attend.
Coaches are always looking for someone to vote for so, if you’re not already doing so, start working hard and coming to more classes. Who knows, maybe next year, YOU will be the Student of the Year at ACS.

We would like to say thank you!
Acs would like to say thank you to all of you that took time to donate blood to the United Blood Services as well as to all of those who tried to donate! United Blood Services has a strict donation protocol that included restrictions from being recently out of the country to having a low iron count.
Your time and effort was greatly appreciated; not only were you able to help a great number of people but you also had the opportunity to attend Grandmaster McNeill's clinic and learn the Radial Cut set using the knife. Grandmaster also taught a special new drill using the Radial Cut set as it's initial platform.
Mr. Kamron Lovgren of San Tan Karate (Mr. Craig Palm's school) received a cool cane as a prize for coming up with a name for the drill that Grandmaster McNeill taught. Grandmaster McNeill brought an extra special cane along with him to give to anyone who could come up with a creative name for the drill that Grandmaster approved of. Mr. Lovgren suggested calling it "Dancing Blades" and Grandmaster McNeill really liked the name.
Student of the Month
Congratulations to the following students who were named student of the month for 2007. The coaches voted on these students based on all their hard work and dedication that they showed in class.

Spring is Coming!
Winters in most places involve snow plows, heavy coats, freezing storms and leaves that actually change color. Here in Arizona, when it comes to Winter, we are lucky. We get to opt for windbreakers, long sleeve tees and shorts. Pretty sweet huh? Unfortunately, winter is all but finished and we only have about three weeks of eighty degree weather ahead of us before we begin our annual 7 month scorching. The point that I am trying to make is that we should all get out there and enjoy the weather while it is still here. If you are sitting at your computer reading this, close your browser and get outside. It doesn't matter what you do. The following is a list of fun recreational activities that you and your family can participate in while enjoying this great weather:
Bike ride - you don't have to be Lance Armstrong to enjoy a ride through the park.
Jogging - if you have been planning on losing weight, now is the time to start exercising, not when it is 115 out.
Picnic - take your family on picnic in the park.
Hiking - the valley has a lot of places to hike, check out Papago for a light stroll and Camelback for the die hards.
Youth Sports - volleyball, tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer, football, etc. - These are all the sports that you loved as a kid, I guarantee you won't get picked last this time around.
Tai Qi - Millions of people in China practice Tai Qi in the parks, why not here?
Reading - whether it is a great book or a tabloid magazine. When you find yourself reading, do it outside!
These are just a few simple suggestions on how to enjoy this great time of year. Try some of these activies, or think of some on your own. The whole idea is to just get out and enjoy yourself. Be a kid for while. If your a kid, be a more of kid (if that's possible). But whether your an adult, a kid, a grandma or a billy goat, I got one thing to say to you: GET OUT AND PLAY!

Jim Tulin Earns Second Black in Chinese Kenpo!
Friday, February 16th, Mr. Jim Tulin tested for his 2nd degree black belt (Nidan) in Chinese Kenpo. Mr. Tulin impressed the audience with his exceptional recall and physicalizations of the required material. Students testing for 2nd black are responsible for 23 katas and 237 techniques (over 450 if you count the variations i.e Inward Defense abcd/e). During the test, any one of these techniques or katas can be called at any time. Bottom line, if you are not ready, you will not remeber your material, if you do not remember your material, you will not pass.......
Mr Tulin, was obviously ready!!!

Come down to the dojo and join us for one of Master Fisher's awesome in-house tournaments. This year we will be inviting students from Mr. Kumar's Tempe Karate, Mr. Palm's San Tan Karate and Mr. Porter's Warriors Guild in Casa Grande amongst others. There will be weapons, sparring and kata divisions for students of all ages and ranks. While we are sending invitations to certain schools, everyone is invited to attend and compete. If you have not had the opportunity to compete in a tournament, this is a great chance to see how it all works in a home field setting. The dojo will remain open for business but we will be running a limited class schedule that day. Look for more information on the tournament coming soon.

Congratulations to Farah Saad for earning Student of the Month for September of 2006. Farah is Purple Stripe in our Youth Program. Farah and her family have been training with ACS on and off for the past 3 1/2 years. Her older brother Ferris is currently a Green Stripe and her other brother Emile has earned orange with us in the past. Farah works extremely hard in class and is a pleasant student to teach. She performs well under pressure and has an incredible amount of physical strength for her age and size. In October, Farah was successful in competition at the Annual ACS Fall Classic Tournament. She is one of our most experienced kumite (sparring) practitioners and has excellent form in her katas as well. Farah is now eligible for the student of the year award which will be decided by the coaches in January.
Way to Go Farah.....Keep up the good work!!!

The end of the year holidays are coming fast, so now is the time to pick up your training. With all of the hustle and bustle of morning commutes mixed with holiday shopping and family events, this time of year can be pretty stressful. What better way to relax than to punch a 140lb leather bag as hard as you can ;-) Whether you come in for the relaxing motions of the Tai qi classes or the hard hitting steam blowing kick boxing/kenpo classes, make time for yourself this holiday season. It will reduce your stress levels, making you more fun to be around, and in turn creating a much more enjoyable holiday season for you and your loved ones.
Don 't put off your training because your too busy and don't wait to make training part of your new years resolution. Keep on training and keep on growing (in the martial arts that is)!

In addition to all of this, Sifu McGhee honored Master Fisher by awarding him the level of 5th Dan (Professor Level) for his continous dedication in training and teaching Chinese Kenpo. This certification with the Five Fingered Fist Society, Sifu McGhee's institution, is an extremely great honor bestowed on only a very few martial artist. Congratulations Master Fisher!!!!!
